Music has been a cornerstone of worship at St. John’s since the earliest days of the parish. In keeping with the centuries-old Anglican tradition, St. John’s maintains a choir of highly trained musicians. We take pride in offering a level of musical excellence that is seldom found today. The choir is responsible for leading all congregational singing and offering musical selections on behalf of those in God’s house. Worshipers are encouraged to lend their voices to the hymns, canticles, and portions of the service that invite congregational participation.

St. Augustine of Hippo said, “He who sings prays twice.” Music plays an integral role in our worship and in our identity as traditional Anglicans, helping us to “pray twice.”

St. John’s has a professional choir under the direction of Dr. Huw R. Lewis, FRCO. Working together with the clergy and congregation, the music ministry of the parish lifts the heart, soul, and mind to contemplate the awesome majesty of our good God.

Drawing deeply from our Anglican heritage, as well as other Western classics, the choir offers sublime anthems and service settings and leads the congregation in the singing of hymns.

Additionally, special music programs are offered for the greater glory of God and the edification of His people. These include Choral Evensong, special service settings on select Sundays and Holy Days, and concerts by guest choirs and artists.
