Wayne State students forgo getaway to help brighten up city

DETROIT – One week of living in Detroit and volunteering in some of its neediest neighborhoods was all it took to convince Brittany Betham that she has a stake in the city’s future and the power to make some positive changes.
A native of suburban Livonia with little exposure to Detroit beyond the theater district, Betham’s choice to spend her freshman-year spring break in the city was such an eye-opening adventure that she’s returned three times. [Full story]

Hope Music Students Honor Professor Lewis

HOLLAND – The students of the Hope College chapter of the national Delta Omicron music honorary society have honored Dr. Huw Lewis of the music faculty with induction as a Chapter Patron.
Lewis, who is a professor of music and college organist, received the honor on Friday, Nov. 2, as a surprise during a ceremony held in conjunction with an organ and orchestra concert in which he was performing in Dimnent Memorial Chapel at Hope.
The college’s Alpha Chi chapter of Delta Omicron nominated Lewis for the award for the way that he represents the national organization’s mission of supporting excellence in music and musicianship. [Full story]

Susan De Kam is originally from Caledonia, Michigan (near Grand Rapids). She completed her undergraduate studies in 2002 with a major in piano, studying under Joan Conway, at Hope College in Holland, Michigan. It was in her freshman year there that she began studying organ as a secondary instrument with Huw Lewis, but it soon became her principal interest. [Full story]
